Granddad's 1968 VW Beetle

« on: May 14, 2015, 08:35:01 PM »
After 30 years, my grandfather decided that he would let me have his 1968 VW Beetle. My friends and I were unsure about what condition it would be in, so we took a truck and trailer and picked it up. We got it home and it sputtered to life but was sputtering pretty bad. We drained the tank and filled it up with 93 octane 100% gas. About halfway down the driveway the gas hit the carb and away we went. It is in amazing shape, we are going to polish the paint, replace some gaskets, and do a front disc conversion. I am so happy to have it, it means the world to me. I hope you like it, look forward to meeting you all.

Thank you! This weekend my girls are going to help me wax it, I remember washing the car as a little boy and thinking it was huge. Granddad bought it new and kept it in its own little shed. Truly a family heirloom. Glad you like it.

Agreed, here is our picture after we had the bug loaded. I gave him the hat, he loves it.

I love this.
Make sure to get every receipt he has and any notes he has.
Photos of family outtings and such with the Bug in it are cool too.
Take care and welcome to the best group of VW lovers on the web.

Thank you all, we did some work tonight, replaced front turn signal gaskets and lenses. Learned a lot about making sure wires stay connected. Put the bug up on the lift and started to take the drums off and check fitting of the discs on front. The Beetle rewarded our efforts with a large pool of gearbox oil from the axle boots. So those will need to be replaced as well. We are also going to replace the rubber from front to back to make sure it stays sealed and clean. I got the new hood and deck lid seals in as well. I am keeping my granddad in the loop on all of this, and loves the attention it is getting. More pics to follow as the weekend progresses.

Lots more done tonight. I replaced the seals around the taillights, the seals on the hood and front deck, sanded rust, primered and painted the steel wheels. Then we tackled the brakes, we are changing the fronts to disc, and changing the master cylinder. Oh and we also learned about axle boots, and how they need to be replaced. I love this car.

Before anyone worries, we are also replacing all the shocks and all of the bushings and seals.  :redbug:

We got everything buttoned up tonight! Brakes bled and adjusted, gear oil changed, we took it out for a spin and it is like a new car. So proud of the car, and looking forward to memories with my children, and grandchildren. I will bring it out to a meeting very soon.

We got the car out today and my daughters and wife got to go for the first long ride. My wife is a photographer, so these photos are much better. Hope you all enjoy as much as we did.
