Passat AC Problem

« on: June 21, 2015, 05:56:54 PM »
One afternoon last week the air conditioning in my 96 Passat stopped working.  It worked fine that morning going to work, but wouldn't work that afternoon.  The compressor is kicking on and staying on and both fans run with the switch on and the air turned on.  I started it up this afternoon and turned the air on, then felt the lines.  The low pressure side got ice cold pretty quick, then started getting warm almost as fast as it cooled down.  I don't think it's low on refrigerant because the compressor never kicks off . . . but I don't have any gauges, so I'm just guessing there.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Best case, charge is off... Worst case, a failing compressor...

A set of gauges is really needed, cause it sounds like everything else is doing okay.
