2005 Passat Headlights

« on: January 24, 2015, 12:58:30 PM »
Franny's TDI has broken headlights that, on high beam, point about 10 feet in front of the car.  They are EXPENSIVE!!!  I searched and searched and finally found some aftermarket lights with a lifetime warranty for $140 for a pair including free shipping.  Now I'm off to install them.  I watched a youtube video . . . The process starts by removing the bumper cover.  Once again I'm reminded of why I like air-cooled VWs so much!   ;D  Wish me luck!   8)

the bumper is not too bad,  if you need help holla,  if one of the headlights is still god leave it in and install the other new one and use it to aim the other one at a wall, then when you replace the other one you can match them up, just an idea

It wasn't as bad as thought it would be.  I only broke one tab on the bottom of the grill and only lost one screw.  There were three more tabs and the break doesn't show, so no problem on the broken tab. I'm sure one of my tires will find the lost screw soon. 8)

I haven't tried to aim them yet.  I got through before dark and we went to Chattanooga right after I got through.  Even though it wasn't dark, I could tell they are going to light the road a whole lot better than the old ones.  I've been driving with the brights on at night all the time since we got it and I've never had any flash their brights at me.  I think that'll change now.

The hardest part was getting the little "tongue" that pops out for the hood release re-attached.  That was a royal PITA!

Indeed, I've fought many of those, and have had to replace a few too.
As far as the broken tabs on the grill are concerned, sounds to me like you just passed a water-cooled ownership milestone. :P
