Heater Core Saga, Day 3.  With new confidence after seeing Hal's heater core box outside of a car, I got started back on the Passat this morning.  With everything loose except for the rear clips, I was still having a lot of trouble getting the box to move.  Hal said I should be able to get all but one clip off, then I could just muscle it off the last clip would pop off by itself.  I couldn't find the top clip on the back . . . so I figured if you can pop one clip, you can probably pop two, so I borrowed a move from Smelly Cat (I am in the "triangle" after all).

I grabbed the heater core box with a ninja death grip and shouted "By the powers of Mordar, release thy heater core box" and gave it a super yank . . .  :o  clips bounced off the firewall and I was holding a newly freed heater core box in my hands . . . well, it wasn't completely free . . . it has several wires clipped to it with wire ties, but for all practical purposes, I have reached the halfway point in this project!  Wooo Hooo!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

The good news is, I made it to the halfway point without breaking ANYTHING!  Now its a "simple" matter of cleaing all the goo the old foam and antifreeze created out of the box, putting the new core and foam in the box and putting it all back together.  Sounds easy enough doesn't it?   ;D 8)

Well......

Just lookee at what you did....  8)

The same trick that Hal told you about on this one worked on the Mk. 2  cars.  Big difference is you could actually manage to do it by pulling just the center console to give you enough working room..... At one point, I could pull the car in, pull the core, install the new one, and be ddriving back out in under an hour.   ;D

The engineers found out about your shortcut and fixed that, didn't they!?!  I think it's designed this way to try to discourage you from fixing it.  If they made everything on them easy to fix, who would ever buy a new car?

The rain is slowing me up.  I'm working outside cause I can't get anything in my garage . . . gott'a get rid of some stuff someday . . . probably not today though.  I did make a little progress this morning.  I cleaned up the box and re-foamed the doors and installed the new core.  The foam job isn't my best work ever, but it beats the heck out of what was on there (a little bit of gooy foam residue) and once the doors are clean, when the foam sticks to them, there isn't much repositioning you can do . . . it's stuck.  I guess I'm officially past the halfway point . . . it's going back together . . . say a prayer for me . . . I'm gonna' need it . . .

That one is tan cloth and I have black leather, but there are a couple of tears in the seat covers and my front door pannels are coming apart and my headliner is falling down.  I'll check on it in the morning and go get it's still avalible.  If I don't use any of it, at that price, I can always get my money back out of it.   ;D

;D  Yeah, that's what they say about all us VW guys!  I'll make good use of several pieces of it and pass the rest along to someone else in need.  Thanks Aaron!  8)

Note to self . . . next time you do something like this, TAKE MORE PICTURES!!!  OK, I've got a piece that I can't figure out exactly where it goes.  I think it was halfway attached to the part it went with when I sat it in the back seat, but it had fallen off by the time I got back to it.  It's a light and it goes in the center pannel of the dash . . . I just can't find anyplace it fits, I can't find a picture that shows it in the manual or any of the pictures I took.  Any ideas?

The first picture below it isn't lit.  I used the flash on my camera . . . the bulb is in the green part.
