Lowes has propane heaters on sale like William and I use. Good luck!
What heater?,  I was thinking of using one for the thing

One of these:

Lowes had the big one with a fan for $139, Academy Sports had it for $129 as of last night.

Hang in there Zen! You've been in tougher situations that you've clearly survived. I wouldn't worry about fixing the car but you do need to focus on what would make the best "lemonade out of lemons" story you will get to tell everyone for the next few years. You had better make it interesting!!!

The next two steps in my manual say
 - Partially remove heating and ventilation unit.
 - Press retainer clips and remove heater core.

OK . . . sounds easy enough, but how?  ???  I'm totally lost as to what to do next.  ???

Any ideas on how to "partially remove the heating and ventilation unit?"

I should have went to Pull-A-Part and ripped one apart just for experiance.  That way I could have figured out where the breaking point was on everything and then walked away with a smile on my face.  ;D

By "partially remove" is this heater case connected/ clipped together in the midddle?

You may be able to disassemble the left half of the box/ remove the heter half with the core, without taking the box completely out....

If it is seamed top to bottom (it will be held together with spring clips, screws, or a combination of both).... that may be a possibility.  If it is seamed horizontally, you most likely have to take it completely out to disassemble it.

Hard to tell from Alldata, but they are saying to remove it completely (which means evacuate the A/C system as well... but, that may  not what you HAVE to do.  Mk. 2 heater cases said you had to, but I have done those in the car, just removed the center console.

It's 2 bucks now.  Still, it's cheaper than breaking something on mine!

It seems to be seamed together horizontally, but also has a seam between the part with the heater core and the part with the blower.  I took a couple of clips off the seam between the heater core section and the blower section, but nothing seemed to loosen up.  What is holding the unit in place?  There is one bolt coming through the firewall next to the heater core inlet/outlet, and it looks like some more down lower on the firewall.  Are they holding it in?  I can't tell anything about this from the drawing in the manual.

This is the drawing in my manual . . . mine looks exactly like it on the heater box side, but my fan turned 90 degrees . . . it goes straight in the front, not from the bottom.

After the meeting tonight, Hal showed me a heater core box like the one in my Passat.  Seeing it out of the car was very enlightening!   ;D  I have a much better understanding of what I need to do now.  Hal also gave me some of the adhesive foam strips for the doors and explained how and where to place them.  The strips I ordered from Bus Depot haven't arrived, so this was great!  If the weather holds out, I might have this thing going back together tomorrow!

Thanks Hal!
