Velvet Green 67 Westy

« on: August 22, 2010, 10:27:06 PM »
Managed to sell everything off but the beetle... having bus withdrawls....

I was working a deal on this beautiful old lady from a friend of mine for months now.  The deal changed details about a dozen times over time, but she is finally mine.  The bus looks much worse than it actually is.  It sat up under a barn/shed that actually fell in against it, doing some minor damage to the roof. To add insult to injury, vandals popped almost all the glass out, dented the dash a bit, and busted out the speedometer.  I guess that the open air allowed the moisture to evaporate out, so rot is very limited, and the paint is 90% og Velvet Green.... Anyways, should be a really easy fix to driver status.  I plan right now to just get it running and driving, roll it with any luck to CYW in October.  Then, this winter, park it when i am done fixing everybody else's stuff, and do the rust repair.  Not that bad, in fact... it's really straight, cargo floors pretty nice, only limited rust in the cab floor, rear shelf is beautiful.  The added icing is the original dealer tag from Gombert Volkswagen in Spartanburg, SC.  Did I also mention that it was a top of the line pop-top westy that was M-coded for the Big top side tent(still has the mounting rails for the walk-through) and the factory wood slat rack.... It should help me through my double cab withdrawl phase.   8)

Acouple of pics.....

The interior is a bit rough... ;D

I can't wait to see what you can do when you've actually got metal to work with!   ;D

Do you need any crank out windows for it?  I know where some were . . . I'll check and see if he still has them if you are interested.

Thanks, Zen.... I've got quite a few... I was gonna piece them together to make a set.  If you know where some usable ones are, I'd probably be interested.

And, yeah, this should be a walk in the park compared to the last one.  ;)

Started cleaning up the paint a bit, so it will look decent sitting out back here.  Then, i hope to get the glass in it before startin up with the mechanicals.  During the second half of my lunch hour, managed to get the oxidation off of the rear quarter, up to the cargo doors... the paint on this bus is actually pretty nice.  It has a little bit of shine to it, and i haven't even started buffing it out yet.....  8)

Lots of digging out, cleaning out, sweeping and vacuuming going on all up in here.

Finally got all the carpet ripped up, i'll clean up the glue reside later, all the broken glass cleaned out of it... doesn't look half bad.  Floors are some of the best in recent past i have seen in a split bus.  Moving on with the exterior clean-up, then i'll get all the glass installed and start up on the brakes, fuel tank, and the engine install.   8)

As is my tradition, a few more pics.  Check out the condition of the interior paint on the cargo doors.  These usually rust up really well due to the insulation in the campers.  It was nice to see little stuff like this....

Actually, Zen, I was thinking that since i am always working on other people's stuff, that i needed something that i could just drive without a whole lot of work.... That way i might actually have a chance to drive my own junk for a change... :D

Work continuing on the pile.... nose cleaned up, emblem on, windshield glass in, couple of the camper windows in.....  Looking better all the time.  This is kinda fun.   ;D

Gonna snatch the front bumper off tomorrow for paint, move around to the driver's side next... That part isn't so cute.

A little more done, turn signals on, bumper, removed, sanded up, painted, back on, still cleaning up the paint a bit.  Did a little buffing, waxed right rear corner.  It's actually shiny... 43 year old paint.   8)  This thing is way too nice for me, but i think i'll keep it anyway.   ;D

I have a good fuel tank for it, and i'll get that in once the glass is in.  I just want to get it semi-weatherproofed first, should have the rest of the glass in in the next week, then it's on to the brakes and any needed chassis repairs.  CYW is looking like it might actually happen.

Nope.  Kingsport, TN.

He had only bought it a couple  months ago, but it had sat for many years where he knew about it, the previous owner just wouldn't ever come off of it.

I gotcha, looks very similar to one that came out of Cleveland (I knew the old man..I tried to get him to come off of it for a long time, then one day when I rode up there he had sold it).

Looking better all the time...

Got the wheels painted and ready, og 67 14" steelies... Ordering tires and brake stuff up for this beauty.  Face is put back together...

Continued applying some wax to the passenger side, up to the passenger side cab door.  Looks pretty decent for something i'd roll...  ;)
