I did my brothers X5 a few months back and the front left was only like $70 for the front left axle. It took about 1 hour 45 minutes and that include driving to the oreillys that had the right part! Was cheaper than the $400 plus the dealership charged for the front right.

The dealership would be the last place I would go.  But even a while back the price was much higher than it is now for even a after market axle . I guess there is a lot of reasons why.

CV boots for my Audi are $65, and a whole axle is $90.

The truth is simple, all jokes aside....

CV Boot.... Germany, Austria, etc.

CV Axle Assembly... China or Taiwan.

Yes.  Seriously.  And for the most part, they are pretty good.  I have seen very few problems.

I'm ordering some more diesel goodies to hopefully take care of this leak, was gonna get a new radiator fan switch/gasket as well. Does anyone know the heat range I need? They come in:

95-84/102-91c
75-70/82-77c
85-74/93-82c

Little things...

Got me a minty accordion boot for the shifter, to replace the old cracked/ripped one.

Also my friend Seth just happened to give me some really nice Mk2 headlights tonight, so I'll be putting those in. And recently picked up some blue door panels in better shape along with some plastic door pockets that go in the bottom. These have holes for 6" speakers which is good since I'll be putting a new radio in soon too.

And my driver's axle finally gave on the way home from work today.

Pulled the axle out and all these little ball bearings fell on the floor. They appear to be coming from the wheel hub that the axle goes in. This isn't good right?

Looks like the inner bearing is toast.
Go ahead and put new bearings in both sides if you plan on keeping this TDI.
Otherwise just clean and rpack the outter (after checking the BB's for damage), and get a new inner wheel bearing.
If you'll clean the old inner bearing off to where you can see a part #, we have a cross reference book here at work that will give me all the same spec'ed bearings #'s from all the big manufufactures.  This will allow you to go to Dalton to Industrial Bearing Supply and probabbly get the same spec'ed bearing for 1/3 the cost of the FLAPS price.  Get me the # and I'll get you the cross list if any exist.  Did this with an inner bearing on my old Honda Coupe (ACooled), FLAPS wanted like $40 for the bearing and the Ind. Bearing place wanted $8 for a FAG bearing to replace the Fafnir bearing that was in it.
Worked great and was identical to the OEM one.

What in the heck you mean re-pack the outer brg. Its totally destroyed. The outer brg. is pressed into the spindle then the hub is pressed into new brg then the  axle with the CV joint is slid in. You will see that the inner race for the outer brg will be more than likely stuck on the hub when it came apart. Hard to get off. I hope the hub OK. You have a 50% chance.   Axle time ?

Good for you Travis. I was just going to tell Russ he was going to have to have someone press the old brg out and put  all this stuff back together. I hope his hub is OK .The inner race sometimes welds itself to the hub or spins on the hub and wears it out as you know. Russ has not said anything about the inner and outer CV joints.

The bearing is most definitely destroyed, there's little pieces of it all on my garage floor. I've just about got the whole thing removed and hopefully it's ok enough to have a new bearing pressed in. I'm going to replace the axles too.

Russ, Something to think about.  Seeing how you are going for 2 axle/CV's and 1 carrier/axle bearing , why not go ahead and replace the other carrier/axle bearing and be done with it for a long time .  You would be paying for just one more bearing.  Oh, Make sure you get the stub axle nut TIGHT when you put it back together.
