Alright, I'm gonna leave here at noon and bring it up. No coolant light on this morning.

Well I just got back from Rick's and he burped the little guy for me. Also in the return line going back to the coolant reservoir we found a foreign object. It looked like a little restrictor, but we don't know if it's supposed to be there or if it just got lodged in the hose somehow. Either way it was clogged with debris, so it wasn't letting any coolant pass through.

Could this have been my problem all along? Building up too much pressure in those hoses and busting them?

Anyways it ran just fine going back on the interstate, so a big thank you (again) to Rick for taking a look at it for me. Now I'll just keep driving it until something else goes wrong 8)

I'm doing my best! I'll be driving it all this week for sure. So far I've averaged about 33 MPG but I'm hoping once I get the injection pump sealed it will be a little better. It sure isn't very fuel efficient to leave it on the ground.

About the heat, or lack thereof...

When I put it on high, a lot of air blows out but not much heat. It really doesn't bother me too much, if I want heat I'll drive the Audi. I was just curious if there was something that could fix it.

Heater core flaps probably lost the insulation.

Good news, though... these you can cheat on, it's a whole lot easier to repair than the ordeal that Zen went through.

I can walk ya through it... nothing much to it.   8)

Good to know...I'll flip through the Bentley and see if it has any tips too.

As for the restrictor, I turned up one thread on Vortex that mentioned it, and the guy did the same thing...cut it out.

If you have an AC equipped car - with the wild upper rad hose that tee's off to the expansion tank - most of them have a restrictor built into the hose near the expansion tank. This car i'm doing, it was clogged beyond rescue - so had to cut it off and splice in some more hose with a union.

I had a nice sized puddle of coolant on the driveway this morning, apparently I've got another leak :(

Well I got under tonight and didn't see anything obviously leaking, I did notice on my lower radiator hose I put on last week was dripping a little so I tried refitting it a little better by pushing it up onto the connector and making sure the hose clamp was in the right place. I didn't see any leaks after that, I'm about to go down and top off the coolant and check for any more dribbles. On the other side of the radiator, it seemed to be leaking a little from the thermoswitch the fan plugs into. I tightened it a little bit but maybe it needs a new seal too.

While I was under there, I also noticed both my CV boots are torn, so it looks like I'll be replacing axles soon.

Why replace the axles ?   Put new boots on and re-pack the CV joints unless they are damaged . Heck of a lot cheaper.

Actually, axles have gotten stoopid cheap these days... less than $100< sometimes closer to $60.  The last several IRS beetles I did got axles... Most even come with a lifetime warranty too.   ;D

I suspect the boots have been torn for a while, I was just thinking for peace of mind new axles would be best in the long run. Auto Zone sells them for about 50 bucks each.

Also, no coolant under the car this morning. Finally. 8)
