Just got word that the Jap beetle is ready to pick up.
BUT It just about killed the 2 front tires when the struts settled on the way back to the shop... Perhaps the 4 -ish inches of drop was a bit much.
Smelly Cat - Looks like I may need those 165 R15's any way.
My 185 65 R15's were a little too wide...
Haven't seen the tires so I cannot ascertain as to dammage.
Mechanic friend says they could be ran safely but the lettering is all messed up on the sidewall.
Looks like I'll be springing for the 145 85 R15's for the front and adjusting for the speedo.
I am stoked, Mechanic had it up to 60 mph on these twisty roads and he said: "That front end is TIGHT!"
I still need to get the rear lowered as well as get a strut tower brace and a rear sway bar and the chassis will be better than any thing the 1300 DP can throw at it (50 HP).
I had not adjusted the valves (didn't drive it much) since I have had it (June 2010) - He stated that the valves were pretty good, just the exhaust valves were a little tight.
I am thinking that the Jap beetle will be getting the Rivera's 1st, then after I have polished the turtle backs, put them on it.

I have started wet sanding the centers of the t-backs and this will be a little time consuming, just not all that hard.
I need to get some rouge and a buffer ball.
The T-backs are HEAVY but they seem to be a fairly soft alloy or even almost pure aluminum in that they sand fairly easily.

I'll put the photos of the Willys up tomorow, it is in GREAT shape body wise.  I will tweek the carbie (carter, not Jimmy) it is flooding, and address some other issues, timing, valves (this will be a trip, never did a flat head before), replace the electric fuel pump with a mechanical (may be causing flooding), then (unless I just love having a flat fender jeep) it'll be on the trading block for a VW.
It was one of these deals that I couldn't pass up.

KC - out

New Side Shot...

Initial interferance with 8 spokes and 185 65 15's

Tbacks with 195 50 15's

Shows off set of Tbacks.
There is 1/4 inch to the springs with the 195's,  and the Tbacks clear the lower control arm nuts by 1/32" - NO JOKE.
I plan to loose the 195 50's and go with a 145 or 155 to get the tire away from the springs.  The 195's just barely touch the fenders when turning hard, but the t backs are 4.5" wide and it is like trying to ride on ballons with all the bulge over the wheels.
The T-backs clear the disk brakes by 1/4 inch or so, so they are a really good wheel for the 4+ inches of drop and the disk brake set up.  I also installed a new 7/8" lowered sway bar and a new urethane set of bushings.
Need to get the narrow tires and the front end aligned, any guidance on the front end settings?
More later,
KC

OK it has been awhile, I go through VW's like some people go through dental floss, so...
I just got 2 Bay window busses this week:
Both of them have good bodies and verry little real rust, good rockers, etc.  Even the window areas up front are good...
This is how they showed up..

The girls and I scrubbed and gave this '74 a brillo and CLR bath...
The Result:

It is comming along nicely...
Hard to see, but the paint is pretty good buffed out.  this is 2 layers of turtle wax, any ideas of what to put on it to get it any better.
The tan color one is VERY complete and has all the goodies except the engine.
I have a 1641 to go in it though -
The '70 is a complete bus except for the middle seat and the floor mat in the back...
Has a singleport VW reman engine with a 3 rib.
More later.

If you haven't already got a buffer, KC (and i am not referring to one or more of the kids)... I'd reccomend buying one of the inexpensive ones from Harbor Freight.  Usually, I am opposed to cheap tools, but mine served me well for many years, i dropped it from 6 ft. in the air, it broke (understandably) so i went out and bought another, on sale like $30.  It's proved to work out just as well as the last one.

I have used Turtle Wax Rubbing compound, followed by there paste polishing compound, the liuid polish, and finally, carnuba wax to bring back og paint on my old junk.  The '67 is still slicker than a Teflon skillet after being outside in the nasty winter weather.

The later one looks like it's cleaning up real well.

OK,
So like for the first time since December 2007 I do not own an aircooled VW... :(
I traded the Jap beetle for a 2004.5 Passat Station Wagon.
This thing is NICE.  I drove down to Cartersville yesterday and traded, It was nice having AC on the way home!   It has an issue with either a motor mount or an axle, in that I hav an annoying vibration inttermittantly under load.
Going to get it on the lift and poke and pry on the mounts to see what is going on.
If they check out then It'll be new axle time.  The PO replaced the Axles, A arms, brakes, and such reciently, but I have heard bad things about the aftermarket axles that are being sold now.
Any way I'll be on the prowl for another Aircooled when I get the Wagon straightened out.
Just gotta hold my cards untill I see what this is gonna cost to get fixed.
Photos to come soon.

Drobe,
Yep, I traded it for Gary's.
I think the motor mount(s) are toast.
I am going to a friend of mines this evening and putting it on a rack to have a lookie lu.
After I get the judgement on what it needs / get it fixed, I'll want to see the volks rod.
Travis, did you ever get a title on the rod?
