Couldn't find anything that had information about that engine code.  How about a part number on the case?  Something like 111-101-025 or 043-101-025, the first three numbers may be different and there may be a letter at the end of the part number.

You could also try contacting http://www.vw-classic.net/index.html (Click on "English" in the upper part of the page if it shows up in German) and see if they might be able to help you out.

Where would the part # be for the case? I have never noticed one before.

The actual p/n is a 9-digit number, sometimes followed by a suffix, side of the block, down low, below the pushrod tubes, usually a fairly large stamping...

Bert the vert is gone...
Going to another surrogate family in Smyrna, GA.
On the prowl for the next "big thing".
ADD!!
I am looking at a Bus... Not a camper, but an honest to goodness bus.

I was enlighted to day - a type 5 engine.
I am investigating this.  Wasserboxer - waterjacket + machine work (head bolts, Cyl holes) + 1914 cc. Pistons / CYL (Type 1) + Ported DP heads + dual carbs=
2313 CC's & 120 ish HP
This is using the 2.1 L case, crank and Rods.
Apparantly the lower end of these is as tough as a T4.

Well , Now you have really done it. You are going to get a education for sure if it needs engine work. If the Brazilians and the Mexicans won't even talk about those engines should help your judgment . Those Guys went to the in-line 4 cyl (Rabbit) right off the bat. If you have to put coolant in( which is often) , you have to jack up the bus in the front , take the grill out and remove a little plug on the rad. to bleed the system or it will get an air lock when you can't put enough coolant in to do the job.(filled from the rear)
Some of those engine ran a long time and a whole lot didn't make to 15,000 - 20,000 before springing water leaks from everywhere tearing the engine up when the coolant got into the crankcase. Alot of folks opted for replacing the engine with an Subaru Legacy and they ran forever. I have driven one of those and they were great( double the HP) and were cheaper than rebuilding the VW. There use to be someone out west made a bolt-end kit . VW in Brazil use to make a ret-tro kit complete with a 2.0 in-line Rabbit (new) engine.
All this BS is worth what it cost you. Its your coal truck do what you want to but I have been there ,done that. ::)

So, if I read this right, it's a Wasserboxer that was converted to air cooled?  Somewhere a while back I read about someone doing this . . . I don't remember the details, but the end result was supposedly combind the strong points of the Type 4 and Wasserboxer and got rid of some of the weak points of both.  Looked like a whole lot of work though.

If I remember right the only major parts that are the same are the front pulley and the valve covers from a type-1. I  forgot about any of the other stuff thank God. ;D ;D

RIGHT, this engine will not have a radiator.
The cyl have to be opened, and the head bolts have to be retapped, but supossedly they are the same spacing and pattern as the Type 1 pattern.  "They" say to put 1915 cc cyl pistons etc in it.  I have not read enough to say if the pivot pin has to be modified either way.
The good news is Wasserboxer engines are VERY VERY cheap.
I know alot of machine shops locally and as soon as I can figure how much has to be machined off I'll get a quote to have the work done and report back.
The block is supposed to be as wide as a T4 so fittment might be a problem.
Any way I'll let you know.

KC, You are almost right. Its not that I don't have a few comments to make on your latest endeavor, but I just have to keep reminding myself this is still a family site and I  just hate to watch creative juices spill on the floor.  ::) ;)

OK,
Why the Jap beetle has been away getting a new front end, I have been projectless...
So today I got a new one.
I just got a 1947 CJ2A Willys...
Tub is Fiberglass but the rest is OEM.
The engine has a few issues, but it does run and move.
It has been sitting for a while.
It has the L head 4 cyl.
I am a little stoked.
More later.
