I have seen these engines before with a metal rebuilder tag over the original serial number, i think i remember one of those starting with that prefix.  Is it stamped into the block or on  a tag mounted where the serial number is usually found?

Standard Stamping, Looks like has never been ground off.
I'll get the # at lunch and respond again.

I looked and most of the "U" prefix engines on the samba were T3 or Universal cases.  This one hasn't got the castings or the taped out holes...
Wonderfull another weird block.
Car ran cool today, the heater boxes were not hooked up right, so I bent some aluminum ducting around the header pipes and hooked it up / filled in the holes in the brest tin and thet seems to have helped.
More later...

PO is not the brightest bulb in the pack and didn't know any thing about the car's mechanicals.
Has a Low Country VW show (N.C.) dash plack from 2001.

Forgot to get the #... Later.
The brakes are dragging on the Passenger's front, get kinda warm.
If I was wanting to adjust them looser in the parking lot here at work, which way is loosening?
give it to me in that the hole towards the front star moved down or up.
I know they are backwards to each other...
I just did this on saturday and have forgotten...

Set up as a DP T1 now...
Any one have any ideas?
Thanks.

You may be on something there.  Might be a ADK rebuilt engine. These ADK engine were very, very good. Much better than the KD rebuilt engine from VW. Go figure. ;D

Nope.
But, I think that I have solved the mystery.
It is a VW / Audi marked case with some VERY different oil passages around the pump and some strange casting raises just behind the lower pulley tin.
Then I see BRASIL next to the VW / Audi stuff.
So, it is a T1 but it is a Brasil case.  Heads are clean / new looking out near the valve covers.

Any more ideas, or do we just agree that it is a Brazillian case and the #'s never gonna jive...

^^^^ That's about it, Casey.  The numbers on Brazilian cases were like a free-for-all.  Interesting that it's a straight up type one case, the ones i have seen in the past were always universals.

I have seen Brazilian cases but I didn't pay much attention to the numbers and like "Grasshopper" said they were universal cases. God only knows what comes out of Brazil and Mexico.  Anyway ,there you have it. Mystery almost solved. Press on. ;D   I'll will say this, How in the world does all these weird stuff find you ? ??? ??? ;D

I'm just lucky I guess.... ;D
The engine doesn't have the lower casting to fit on an early bay moustache Bar.
It does however have some raised Bosses that are approx 1" off the case and go to just behind the lower pulley tin.  The engine also appears to have some extra "passages" around the oil pump area and a large raised area at about 2:00 above the oil pump that has a quarter sized "plug" in it...
I do not recall seeing these extra castings / plugs in the old AS41 cases I'm used to.
I hope that they are for extra oiling...
I lost 5 mph top end uphill on the interstate when I installed the OEM paper filter back on the Carbie... The cutsie chrome round one seems to have flowed better and didn't block as many of my hood vents.  This beetle ahs the '71 hood with only 2 rows of vents on it...  II am going to install standoffs or use the hood off the Japp Beetle when I paint the Jap Beetle... do a swap with this one.

Lucky I guess.   I wouldn't be a bit surprise if you showed in a Bay Window van made in  Borneo that came with a factory installed Daimler- Benz 601B V-12 aircraft engine from a ME-109 fighter aircraft.  I'm holding my breath. :o :o ;D ;D

I'll get right on that...
I looked at the samba forshots of cases, and the new AS41 cases have these castings on them.
Case must be fairly new.

Bert the vert tried to strand me this moring...
Started sputtering up a hill (isn't that always the case, why isn't it ever downhill when they cut out...).
Got out of the road and coasted 100 or so feet backwards down the right of way to a gravel electrical sub station drive.  There was lots of traffic and a VERY narrow shoulder, not easy or fun.

Once safely out of harms way I lifted the hood and checked the coil wires and the power to the coil with a little light, checked the points to see if I had spark, Check.
Then I looked at the fuel filter over the rear axel all's well there, check.  So then I go to the carbie and check the fuel lines, check.  So I look at the fuel pump, No pin = no check....
Ok the pin had come off and slid out the back, why do they never slide out of the front...  Any way I marked the distributor and clamp and pulled the disto and pulled off the FP and worked the shaft back in.  I did a on the side of the road peening job with my 3/8ths rachet as a hammer and a 1/4" extension with a torx bit in a 1/4 socket holder as the peen.  Worked pretty good and got home, timming is a little off so I drove another car to work today.

Have you got a part number on the case?  I'll try to look it up in the parts system and see if it shows up.
