Drove it 2 hrs back from B'ham at 60 -65 mph.  I-59 is a booring drive. . . . Will have to rebuild something in it though, got squrrelly 3 times when I would hit a bump on a left hand curve. Wheee!

You only hit THREE bumps?!  :o  I-59 was one of them. Where were the other two?

Glad to hear you made it home OK.  If you really want some double takes, you need to mount a steering collumn on the left side, then get yourself a big dog and teach him to sit in left seat with his paws on the wheel!   ;D

A rare bird indeed. A 1300 cc dual port.  I have seen a 1200cc 40 hp dual port and a 36  hp based dual port but I think it was a "Okrasa"  There's no way you can tell what you will end up with when dealing with these non-USA spect cars. Nice find Dude. I had a 1956 Porsche 356 engine in my Manx years ago. "N" model engine with a single Zenith 32. About 70 hp I think.

I'm thinking that the car is still a 1300DP.
It still has the Thermostat.
It is running a 31PICT3 DP carb.
Still has the VW muffler on it.
Wow this thing is weird.
Doesn't want to idle, I need to pull the engine and reseal and retorque every thing.

Just ran the Vin and I have a Aug. 1970 Super. It was the 7,9## off the line.
Since they ran the Vin #'s sequentially for beetles and supers, who knows how many SB were ran before mine.
I litterally have one of the 1st SB ever made...
Ubber Cool.
The AB engine that is in it is also an early 1971 model engine.(Aug 1970, but before Aug 1971)
Cleaned the Carbie and it is running much better, drove it to work today.
I am stoked.

Sweet.   8)

I am usually not a huge Super Beetle fan, I became an early snob many years ago.   :-[

I guess after working on so many of them, it takes a little more than a common car to get me excited.  This super, however is not common at all, it's actually quite a neat little car. Glad you got it KC, hope to see some more of it.   :)

VIN: 1112090872
It apparantly was L96E (86) Gemini Metalic (light blue).
The wierd thing is on the VIN (Super VIN Plate) there is a 3 didgit # stamped perpendicular to the VIN and on the left hand edge, it is 155.  I was under the impression that this was the model #.  but when I look this up it tells me that it is a Kubelwagon...LOL.
I'll get a shot of the VIN plate and post it.

Strange but cool.
I am thinking that the shakes might just be the tires being 8 years old....
Going to put the 1 yr old tires off of ASBug on this bug and see if it helps.

I want to go back to a stock steering wheel.
It has a column in it that appears to be like my '72's but w/o the wiper arm (or a place for it...)
If I was to pull the aftermarket wheel off, what are the #'s difference between an early and late steering wheel?
Just want to know what I need to get from the Junk yard in Dalton...

Early 2-spoke wheel will fit on a later column, the only issue being that the later cars had a turn signal stalk that came more towards the driver, thus the later 4-spoke wheel is "taller" at the center.  If you don't have a turn signal stalk, then you don't have anything to worry about.

I ran a pre-70 steering wheel on my 72 super beetle, i just made slight relief cuts on the back sides of the wheel spokes to clear the turn signal lever.

Was going to pull the carb off on Saturday evening to rebuild it and ran into a problem / observation.  I could not get my 13mm wrench around the back nut on the carbie... After about 20 minutes and 3 wrenches I decided to look at the 1600 parked right next to it, I knew something dint feel right in that although the 1600 34 carbie is difficult to get off w/o removing the intake, it is possible.  This intake (dual port mind you) has a head for mounting a SP carb!  That is why the nut was so close to the intake vertical pipe...
So I just pulled the bowl off and cleaned out the spigot and cleaned the !2! idle circuts that this thing has and it is running much better.
But what a confusing set up.  Is there a special bent wrench I need to buy to get this nut off in situ?
I can not wait to drive it to the next cruise in for GF to have a look at it.
It will blow his mind.

I have a turn lever, just not the wiper lever.
I'll look and see if the '72's is any more bent than the '71's and go with that.
I have found out that the car DIDN'T have a padded dash as an OEM.
The vents around the speedo should be there, but have been erased with steel.  I am also thinking that the Radio was "deleted" with steel.  The work done to this dash is top notch and looks OEM.  I still think that it never had an ashtray though.
