I found this online ( http://www.chirco.com/tech_articles/?p=95 ) . . . When they changed to the new VIN system for the 65 models, the new years started August 1st, as you can see in the list below . . . although I've seen a few examples where this was fudged a few days for some models.  I think they had used August 1st as the start of the new year starting back in the early 50s.

My vin is 4 99# ###.
Definately a late Aug '62 Car...
I ran the #'s and it should have been around the 24th of August 1962...
That is why I was wondering about the date...

Yep, that would make it an early 63 model.

Looking through all these pages it appears that I have documented 17 VW's since this thread began...
I have driven all but 6 of them.
There are a few others that never made the thread (green ghia, and a '72 super that was a rust bucket...) but this is a good repersentation, and I'll just keep up this thread as a counter.
Cool.

Just did some research n the 019 Bosch disto in the '63 it is an early 2 pc. point style racing disto.  Supposed to be the perfect disto for a stock to mild hot rod engine, Prices are out of this world, and mine is the "Screamer" that is blue and came with a special blue coil and plug wires in the 60's.
Cool beans.

Cast iron case ?  If so that dist. was stock "stuff" on '60 back Type-2's and some early 356's EMPI back in the 60's offered a bolt on kit for 1500 cc cars that came with a 2 barrel Zenith carb/intake manifold, header, cast iron dist( VW called that dist Type 181 for vans ) coil. All that stuff for$129.00.  This was a really nice set up. I have had a few of those kits. Somebody in the club use to have one of the catalogs from back in the day.

Yepper, the 019 is a cast iron case. It was offered as an upgrade as either the black or the blue Screamer kit like the one I have.  Kit was supposed to have some hipower plug wires and a blue 6v coil as part of the deal...

I picked up another odd disto today, it is a 001???
IUt has a small short rotar cap but has an odd super tall body...
It appears that it might have had a vacuum can or something on it at one time.
Gonna have to do some research on it though.
It just looks odd, so of course I had to have it.... LOL.

I may be wrong here, but I think the 001 was a VW built dist. not a Bosch. We called it a 186 It showed up on some late 63- 64-65 Beetles along with a VW built 6V Gen. This was a random thing. The reg. was square with a VW logo stamped on the cover. Also was the first time VW tried to use carbon thread plug wires. They were blue . Non of it was very good. The fun part was when a customer brought his car in for service on a rainy day you stood a good chance of getting your Willie grounded to the rear bumper if you had your hands anywhere close to the plug wires :o :o

The 001 I have is for a 1970 T3 with an electronic rev limiter and a vacuum can (neither of which I have, so it is worthless or priceless.  It does indeed have the bosh and VW #'s on it. I think I will make a wooden display for these extra distos I have and put them in my Office at work. Who knows, I might even get some donations from others who have crazy stuff in their garages.
The cap and button in this disto are good and clean and are worth more than the price I paid for the whole lot...
The cap looks like one of those short fat ones, but is for a smaller later style disto.

I also picked up 2 complete sets of Ghia carpets, (Black) for $15 today at Stevenson and 8 brand new push rod tubes for $8.
Just collecting stuff for the ghia when the '72 is sold...

Installed the '62 pop out windows in the '63, and installed an Autometer Electric Oil pressure gauge. OK pressures, happy I do not have to rely on the idiot light only now.  After 2 hour drive in 100* weather @ 55-60 (Hwy 411) it idles at 10 PSI and runs at 1/2 throttle at 25 PSI.

Cooler drive back up interstate at 70MPH @80-ish degree ambient temp  shows 4-5 PSI improvement to both numbers.

I found a great trick to installing the new rubbers on the pop outs.  WAY easier than the last time I did it to the ASBug.

I just went and moved around my newest purchase, a 1970 bus that Travis Young used to own. It is cool.  I need to get an idle sylinoid off of another carb and put it on as the one on the 34 isn't working right now and it'll die at an idle after a few seconds. Accellerates smoothly, and has no funny noises. Engine was supposidly redone a few years back and it feels like it.  It is a bench seat front that has the spare tire under the seat (front 60 side) and NO cutout in the back for a spare tire. It is a deluxe and is only missing the trim and clips for the slider door track cover.  It has the corner pieces on it.

Going to tow it home tomorrow and get started on the repairs to the side, If I can get to it on Saturday I may have the repairs done this weekend, but it is looking like it'll be next week before I can get the sheet metal and time to fix it.

Comes with a spare engine that has rod knock once warmed up, from running w/o oil for a few miles.  Spare engine runs well otherwise.  I am thinking that the AE engine that is in it will be destined for the Ghia and the Bus block I had for the ghia will be cleaned and rebuilt using the parts from this other bus spare engine I have to put back in this bus.

Going to get the M-codes and run them tomorrow evening and will report back about the bus.

Don't really need it and will probably sell it, but it is another in my continuing collection of strange birds...
