My Rabbit

« on: February 22, 2013, 02:49:45 PM »
You've probably seen me driving around my Rabbit, if not here it is. It's an '82 diesel I bought after I sold my turbo diesel Jetta.

This Rabbit has been much more reliable for me, I've been driving around since about September of last year. Except for late October when I replaced the radiator and resealed the water inlet flange to the head, and the top bolt broke off. We tried drilling it out and ended up getting the easy out broke off in there as well.

Several months went by with no progress and finally earlier this month, we attempted to weld a stud onto what was left of the bolt and attach the inlet that way. That didn't hold, but a little bit of JB Weld and some Permatex Ultra Gray to seal the flange up seemed to do the trick. I've put close to 800 miles on it since then and it's holding up very well.

Since then we've put some fender flares on it, welded the exhaust back on (it was barely hanging on) and cleaned up the wiring in the engine bay a little bit. I have plans to do the interior on it very soon.

I'm really happy with it, for just driving back and forth to work it's perfect. With the 4 speed transmission it's a little slow on the highway but plenty of pickup for around town. I hope to keep on driving it for many more years!

Really a nice car.  Be glad its a 4 spd.  Believe me when I say It will get better fuel milage than a 5 spd. Next time you have one of those little 10mm headed bolts getting stuck(like on the water pump) call and I will tell how get them out 90% of the time without "ringing" them off.  Been there, done that ;D ;D

Oh I don't doubt that. It was a factory 5 speed but someone swapped it for a four speed. When it gets warm I hope to achieve high 40s again. In the winter I'm getting low 40s but it still beats the Audi.

Now that would be nice. Could have saved me 4 months of downtime! I'm hoping I'll never break another one though.

That is a SERIOUSLY nice early diesel... most of them are just completely worn out.

I'd roll that any day of the week.   8)

And, ditto on the 4spd....  ;)

Thanks guys! Compared to my Jetta, this Rabbit just seems to run stronger and healthier.

I've got plans to do the interior next. In fact I just got in the material. I will give you a sneak peek at what I have planned.

I would love some backup lenses, they seem to be harder than hen's teeth to find though.

Battery has gone dead on me a couple of times in the past few days. Once at the grocery store, had to get pushed off. Then leaving the Ronald McDonald House last night I noticed my lights getting dimmer and dimmer, by the time I got home the battery was dead again. I was gonna stop for fuel but didn't want to risk it not starting again. Luckily being diesel the engine itself doesn't need any electricity to keep it running.

We traced it to a broken terminal on the alternator, the one leading to the exciter wire. It's kind of rigged up now to work again, so we'll see. I'll drive it around and see how it does. If not, a new alternator isn't too much of an expense.

Have it rebuilt at American alt and starter.

There is a guy about a block north of 23rd street on Highland Park who rebuilds starters and alternators. Brian told me about it and I stopped by to pick stuff up once. I've heard he is cheaper and just as good, if not better than the place on Rossville Blvd, which I believe is American.

Thats ok, I saw that autozone has VW bug/bus starters for $40 with the lifetime warranty thing...thats a no brainer! I can't say that I blame you.

The only problem with the lifetime warrenty on the parts from some of the big chains is that lots of times you have to use it.  Sure, you only pay for the part once, but about the third or forth time you bolt on a clutch slave cylinder on your S-10, you start to wonder if maybe you shouldn't just go to the dealership and pay through the nose for the OEM part.  Not that I would know anything about that . . .  ::)

That's true, I have an Auto Zone alternator in the bus and I've had to replace it twice. I've sworn if it dies again I'm going with a better replacement.
