Misfire on 2001 jeep Cherokee

« on: December 03, 2014, 11:27:28 AM »
I started the jeep up today but it immediately began to stumble, there was a significant loss of power, and the idiot light began to flash. I quick survey of some jeep forums leads me to believe this means I have a misfire. The likely causes seem to be bad throttle position sensor, coil pack, spark plug or maybe even a stuck valve. I replaced the spark plugs 20,000 miles ago. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

I just filled up testerday. I was in Memphis over thanksgiving. I wonder if I got some dirty gas while I was there... I guess I could get some fuel treatment or injector cleaner at autozone on my way home.

You may have misconstrued my comment. I was suggesting we set it on fire...

Which light is coming on?

If the light is flashing I'd say misfire for sure,  probably coil,  check the faults,  I have an 87 so it doesn't have coil packs

Good thing you have an extra coil pack!

I've been working on one of my kid's 97 Grand Cherokee for months.  It runs good one day, won't run at all the next. Runs like crap the next.  No rhyme or reason as to when it runs good, when it runs bad and when it just dies completely.  We've replaced just about everything on it sensor-wise.  Every time, it seems to fix the problem, only to have it come back in a day or two.  We went to Pull-A-Part a few weeks ago to pick up a couple of engine computers and try them, since that's what ended up finally fixing dozens of others with the same symptoms that I've read about.  They had about a dozen cars on the lot with a computer that would interchange.  Two of them had been put on the lot in the last two days.  When we got there, ALL of them were missing the computers.  Seems to be a WAY too common issue with Jeeps of that era.

GOOD NEWS! The jeep fired up just fine after work. Not ready to torch it yet. The check engine light is no longer flashing. The engine is idling as usual. I am thinking the Zen is right with an  electrical/computer issue being the root cause.

Drove straight to Nick's to put the code reader on it. As usual, I had the P0455 evaporative emissions system leak (Gross leak / no flow) and P0442 evaporative emissions system leak (small leak). But there were a couple of new error codes: P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire and P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor (A Circuit). Also ran some realtime data which indicated the throttle position sensor is good.

I'm off to Autozone to get some fuel treatment and/or injector cleaner. Preferably, something that says miracle on it.

Thanks for all the advice. I will keep everyone posted. I've got to keep the Jeep running so I have something to tow my bus with  8) ! Has anyone experienced these error codes / issues before?

Sometimes coils can act up if the humidity is high or they get wet

Update: the Jeep is running as usual. I put some fuel system treatment/injector cleaner in to the gas tank and some Marvel Mystery oil to the engine. No issues so far. I was just bragging last weekend on how I only have 128,000 miles on the Jeep. I was hoping I would not start having dependability issues until much later. I will definitely be breaking out the bus this weekend just in case.
