Can alt shred belts when driving at nite?

My belts were squealing randomly for a month. Then I drove car at nite and the belts sounded like a scream movie.  The I smelt burning rubber and the alt lite came on.  Belt shredded..  I pull off alt and it spins ok.  Has some play in shaft.   Will an alt bind up under load like that?   Sc

Master kungfoo,  I pulled Alt , had it tested. It's ok.  Bought new belt.  I reckon loose 30 year old belts. Seems ok now.  Also ripped out ac unit.  30 less engine lbs.  sc
