Yeah, that was the one!  His nephew was principal at Hixson High for a while.  I spoke with him about the idea and he seemed pretty hip to it.  Thanks for asking around about the pictures and all.  Was Southland the dealer in Chat. in 63?  Is that the one where you worked?

Hey Godfather............you mentioned the name Dearing but didn't say anything else that I caught. There are Dearings in my ancestry. My grandmother was a Dearing and I'm kin to the Dearing who had the resturant/beer joint on Rossville Blvd. Is this the same bunch of Dearings?

Does anyone know how to get ahold of the German Addiction magazine that is supposed to be starting? I need a phone number or email. All I got at their web site was a form to sign up for a complimentary premier issue (which I did). But they had no other contact info.

Anthony, If memory serves me right, Southland VW went into business in 1953 on S.Broad as Southland Motors. They were the BMC(Austin-Healy,MG, etc) dealer and took on VW as a side line in 1954. At that time there was a waiting period about 6 weeks long to take delivery on your new Bug. P.O.E. was New Orleans and they hired drivers to bring the cars to Chattanooga. No choice on color. If you were # 21 on the list and you wanted a blue car and # 21  came in red, Tough! That was your car. If you declined you lost your deposit. Southland dropped BMC in 1955 ,I think, and became Southland VW. The company movd to Brainerd Rd in July 1964 and thats when I went to work for VW. At one time Southland was the largest VW dealer east of the Miss. River. A new shop,15 Techs,  we could service anywhere from 70-125 Bugs/vans a day. I wonder where all these "critters" went. The dealership was located where Preble Infiniti / Volvo is today
You sure have "rattled" my cobwebs today
