I think that's from the drive-in we had at Krystal on Brainerd Road in May 2009.

For those of you who, like me, never had the opportunity to hear David making music live, here's a song that was recorded live at The Bridgetender back in the 1990s.  The group is "Compass Rose."   This song is an old John Prine tune call "Spainish Pipedream (Blow Up Your TV) and features David on guitar -- [ Invalid YouTube link ]

Good song. Good video. Good guy. Wished I'd heard him play at some point. Do we know if he did any of the vocals for this? I like the solo.

Linda showed me some pictures of the group and told me who they were and who was singing . . . of course, without that written down, it was gone the next time I went to sleep.  I don't think David sang anything other than background harmony vocals with Compass Rose.  Linda can fill us in with the details.  Maybe she'll be able to make it to the meeting tomorrow night.

I found a couple more pictures and Linda emailed a few as well.  This is another cut from Compass Rose, Live at the Bridgetender.  Linda said "Amy" was one of his favorites . . .

That was fun! Man how things have changed... Do we know if David did any vocals or only picking?

He did a little of the background vocals and harmony on a few of the songs.  You can catch a few little snippets of him making comments before and after some of the songs on the album.  I've got an album of the bluegrass group he was in that used to play the Grand Ole Opry . . . he provided the base vocals on a couple of the songs on that one.

I just bought an LP of Bob Johnson and the Lonesome Travelers "Twelve Shades of Bluegrass" on eBay.  I think it was released in 1962.  Linda gave me a CD of this, but it has a lot more tracks than the LP . . . but the LP has an interesting bio on the back.

If my research is correct, this tune is track 11 on the Twelve Shades of Bluegrass album.  It was co-written by Bob Johnson and Dave Johnston (yep, he not only played, he wrote music as well!)  I believe the album was released in 1962.

I "think" Bob Johnson is on the banjo, David "Fingers" Johnston is on the Guitar, Norman Blake on the Mandolin, and Roy M. Huskey, Jr. on the Base.  I don't know for a fact, but I would not be suprised to lean that they had at some point performed this live on the Grand Ole Opry.

This one is from an album released in 1962.  David is picking guitar and providing the base vocals.  Listen for his line near the end . . .
