« on: October 03, 2010, 09:06:07 PM »
went up sat am, drove dads 67,  no problems at all.  one picture is my buddy on the way back.  the others are a vw that i tought someone had welded together their own thing but it turns out it is a country wagen made by vw and imported to australia,  the owner said there are 9 in the us and less than 1000 in australia.  Pretty cool vehicle.  Did not know they made them untill the show.

That "Critter" was built in Australia by VW . Very rare . If you looked under it you would have seen a Type-2 reduction gear tranny and front spindles . I saw one years ago at VW school in DC

I've seen pictures of a Country Wagen but never seen one in person . . . at least now I know people who have seen one person.   ;D

There was also a somewhat "Thing-like" water cooled vehicle produced by VW called the Iltis (or something like that) . . it looked like a cross between a Thing and Country Wagen crossed with a Rabbit.

The Iltis was the German replacement for the military 181 Safari and the DKW(DUCK). The Iltis was a 4-wheel drive, water-cool 4 cyl inline (Audi/VW engine). This thing was a very, very good off road "Critter".  It could idle up 45-50 degree inclines and ford pretty deep water. The Iltis was replaced by Mercedes-Benz Galanderwagen(?)

Cool, did not relize vw had produced a 4 wheel drive jeep type vehicle.  this circle yer wagens was huge, vendors were setting up outside in the parking lot and they were having to get non esential vehicles out of the show area early sat morning to make room for the show cars
