Interesting WWII (maybe Pre-War) German Photo Album

« on: May 06, 2016, 09:38:55 PM »
I got a notice from estatesales.net about an auction this Sunday in Talking Rock, GA.  There are some German WWII "war souvenirs" in the auction . . . a helmet, some metals, some arm bands, etc. . . . but the most interesting thing I saw was a photo album.  On the web site, there are a couple of shots of the cover and a couple of shots of the inside.  I'm attaching them.  Look at the last picture.  IS that an original photo of one of the original VW Cabriolet prototypes?  It sure looks like it to me.  It has suicide doors, which all the Beetle prototypes had up until the last pre-production run Beetles in 1938.  Maybe it's not even a Beetle in the photo . . . it's a grainy low resolution photo of an old black and white photo and the car has crashed, but it looks really interesting . . .

The title stamped on the cover translates to "war memories". That's an odd title for a photo album! I could imagine "school memories" or childhood memories", but could you imagine the kind of photos something like that could hold?

In the photo, I think we're looking at what's left of a front-engined car. Looks like it rolled at least once, bending the windshield back and knocking the top loose. Looks like it had a more formal, squared-off roof line and rectangular rear side windows. Beyond that, who knows? Mercedes? DKW?

After looking at it closer, I think you are right Anthony.  I think it is a front engine car.  It also looks like it's longer than a Beetle from the back of the door back to the fender.  I wish I could have made it over to the auction.  I would have loved to take a look at this album up close.  There's no telling what kind of pictures were in it.
