^^^^ Fear not, You don't have to worry about this one running you down.... hell, running at all would be just dandy.... Evidently my no-start the other day was more than just low on gas... it was the initial warning shot.

Fuel pump is dead.

Crap.

Found a place on-line that comes well reccomeded, they offer rebuild kits, made in the U.S. from high quality bits for rebuildable pumps.  They are also compatible with the newer fuels, including the ethanol crap.  Ordering parts is fun. Not expensive at all, it just excercises my patience...   ::)

Stoopid old Mopar.

Dead fuel pump... or at least full of crap, carb acting up... all a result of junk starting to come out of the tank that needs to be cleaned and lined....

Plus, I am needing some tires, another metal line on the brakes, blah blah blah...

I had another issue the other day when i was draining the oil again, and noticed a lot of solid black particles coming out with the oil.  Looked in the drain hole, saw something blocking the drain hole... stuck a finger in there, and right into a 1/2" of chunky goop.  Crap.  Again.  Decided to suck it up and change gear for the 234th time.  Taking the engine out to disassemble and clean it properly.  All of the sludge i saw in the oil coming out meant that the gunk was circulating in the system... that gets into the pickup, clogging it and or going through the bearings.... This way will be much more preventative versus reactive.  Also, i will go ahead and take the car home on a roll-back, and after i finish the customer car in the garage, it's on to the body work on this old girl.

Not what my heart wanted, but it is what my peace of mind (and, in the long run, my wallet) needed....

^^^^ Exactly the sort of thoughts that were running through my brain.

Plus, the knowledge that the 301 V8 had issues, along with some other Mopars that year, of having a hard bearing material that would cause oil pressure loss, crank damage, etc.  I have read much info regarding making sure you replace the engine bearings with new ones when you rebuild one, as they are made out of a material that avoids these issues....

So, yeah, I am gonna play it safe and spent a bit of money now instead of a huge sum later on.   8)

Plus, this way I can get the body work done while the engine is down, and put it all back together, hopefully by the Fall.  Maybe later, but it will only be down for a limited time, then won't need to go right back in and do more.

That was pretty quick, and easy... stripped the engine down Friday evening, and pulled it out Saturday morning....

Lots of original stuff, and the engine bay is in very good condition, should clean up really well.  Plan on painting all of the engine compartment and the forward frame, inner fenders, etc, while the engine is out...  Left  the trans in it. I can cure the leaks there with it in the car.

Let me tell ya, a cast iron, Poly V8 is a bit heavier than an air-cooled flat four...  :D

Engine torn completely down, the block cleaned out.  Gonna put in some fresh rod and main bearings, a set of rings, oil pump, and timing chain, hone the cylinders, and call it done.  Other than the heavy amount of rust I flushed out of the coolant passages, and the muck that used to be dinosaur juice at one time, it was in surprisingly good condition, the bearings actually looked real nice.  Thinking I wight go ahead and replace the freeze plugs too, since I got so much rust out of the block.  They'll probably be leaking before too long.   8)
