Grunt work going on right now.... cleaning up the mountains of sludge left from years of non-detergent oil, flushing out the oil returns in the head that i never knew were there, all in the hopes to end the blue smoke clouds... should have my new stem seals in a few days....

Enjoy...

Looks like that Mike Rowe Ford Commercial....
LOL - I cannot believe it was running that caked up.
Good luck, cleaning all that out w/o removing the engine is going to be a pain...

^^^ Not  too bad, actually.  I am just trying to remove the majority of it from the top, letting very little go into the pan.  I have had extensive experience from, as Travis pointed out, the illustrious oil caking 1.8 Turbo Passats....  :D

Oh, and a totally kewl side note... I was reading on some on-line Mopar forums, there was talk about one of those "Holy Grail" items....  It seems that as these cars came down the line, and transferred from one stage of production to the other, they printed of paper build sheets for the workers, listing option codes, trim colors, etc...  They were supposed to be thrown away, per Chrysler, but at the rapid pace they were being built at, they sometimes got left in the car.  Following suggestions as to where I might find one, I have actually located not one, but two, so far in my car.  One taped to the underside of my glovebox, kinda waterlogged, hard to read.  And, a second one under the rear seat, a hog-ring punched through it to hold it to the springs.  Other than a few tiny mouse chew-holes, it's perfectly legible, all the codes are clearly type-printed, and the inspectors grease penciled code is there too.

SWEET!!!   8)

I do loves my documentation.

Thats pretty cool.

I remember going to the BMW plant in Spartanburg, SC a few years back and my dad pointed out that the front emblems were replaced with a barcode thing that when they went to each station, they would scan it and put the right parts on. He recalled ordering a car once and it showed up with a steering wheel from the wrong interior color combo. Apparently human error occured alot in the old checklist days.

All that goop must be a early Mopar problem.  This same thing happened to my Dads '57 Plymouth in 35,000 miles. My Dad always used Shell High Det. oil. I noticed when I was changing his oil, It would take a little longer each time for the oil to drain into the crankcase. The last time I changed the oil ,it stayed in the head and ran all over the place puking oil out the filler hole in the valve cover.( thats also when oil came in 4 qt. can) He took it to the dealer and they cleaned it. To late, the engine lost its main brgs. Chrysler relaced the engine at no charge

My '96 Passat has the same issue.  We had it for over a year before I realized the drivers side front door panel didn't match the other three.

Been working a little every day, before and after work, and during lunch...
-Got the engine de-sludged, oil flushed out, valve stem seals replaced, put it all back together. Very little of the smokey thing now.
-Finished flushing out the cooling system, running through the 3-6 hour chemical induced running time now, getting rid of the rest of the rust.
-Replaced the disintegrating ground cable.  Starter is spinning over much faster now.

Started work on the brakes, looking forward to getting this thing back on the road.   8)

A few pics from the other day... Gave her another bath, took her for a little roll around the block before taking her back apart for the brake repairs.

Got the brakes done up.. still gotta do a little more bleed and adjust action, but the brakes are big time better...
I rebuilt the master cylinder, replaced all four front wheel cylinders, rebuilt the back ones, replaced the flex lines, and a couple of rusty hard lines, cleaned up the shoes and the drums, no replacement necessary, re=packed the bearings, reinstalled the seals.  Then I flushed out the lines, nice clear fluid at all four corners.  Much better stopping with all four wheels.   8)
