Regarding the tapered shaft and puller.
I once removed a Ducati flywheel in a similar manner. The crankshaft was tapered and the magneto/flywheel was very tight. I tightened the puller down as tight as I could get it, then smacked the puller bolt with a hammer.
About the third smack, the puller and flywheel shot off and flew across mama's livingroom about three or four feet or so.
First suggestion...don't do it in mama's livingroom.
Second suggestion...make sure that if it does come off in a big hurry that you are not in it's way!!

I tore the green one down, cleaned it and put it back together. It went back together nicely and freed up the stuck parts. Has great compression, but no spark. Still need to learn the Wico system. Rebuilt a carb the other night and I think I got it put back together right... for as simple as it is, it was quite confusing. Only need spark (and eventually a new flywheel!) to run!!!

I think David was right. It looks like someone at Maytag jumped ship and went to Johnson.  If the two engines were any more alike, the parts would interchange.  I wouldn't be shocked if some of them do . . . I wonder if the flywheels will?

I've found a guy in Wheeling, WV that has a running Maytage 92 for $250.  He mentioned in the ad that he also had a "bucket of parts" for these engines.  I emailed him and asked about a flywheel and pulley.  He said there were 3 flywheels and a pulley in the bucket.  He said two of the flywheels are good, one doesn't have the magnet.  He's supposed to send me some pictures and prices as soon as he figures out how much it will cost to ship 'em to me.  So, if they are cheap enough, I might end up with an extra flywheel or two . . .

There are several repro. manuals written about old Wico mags. Pretty common . You need to find some web sites for antique engine clubs and part vendors . There are plenty out there.

Hey Nick, when you get yours going you need to build one of these:

http://blog.modernmechanix.com/this-sidewalk-runabout-is-easy-to-build/

I would build one, but I think it would take more than single cylinder Maytag to pull my fat butt around!  I'm more in the market for an old ice cream churn.  (Which may help expain the fat butt thing . . . )

I decided that one way or the other, this flywheel was coming off TODAY.  I gave up on using a drift and since I needed a bigger hammer I improvised.  I ran the nut down even with the end of the crankshaft and gave it a good direct tap with the 2" ball of my double ball receiver hitch.  Nothing.  Hummmm . . . then I asked myself "Self, what would Smelly Cat do?"  Hummmmmm . . . Then it hit me!  I shouted "By the poweres of Mordar, release thy flywheel!" then I gave it a SUPER WHACK.  Why didn't I think of that before?  Darn thing just fell off.  And I must have hit it straight on, because I didn't even damage the nut or crankshaft!  The tear-down is complete.  Now I just have to clean it up and put it all back together.  The only two things I've found that really looked bad were the crankshaft bushing on the kick-start side and inside fo the gas tank.  Especially the inside of the gas tank . . .

WWSCD?

Looks good! A little muratic acid and water in a 50/50 or so mix will remove all that crap in about 10 minutes. It's cheap at lowes or whatever near the swimming pool chemicals. I probably have a few extra gallons left over from a gas tank I did. It removes all the rust, but you have to dry it and paint it/ seal it IMMEDIATELY or else it will flash rust in another 10 minutes. Sure does get everything down to bare metal quickly thought. Start with a lesser concentration and all more until you get the feel of it. Results may vary.

Which brings me to my next question . . . What should I use to seal the tank once it's clean?

Oreillys has gas tank sealant in a quart can for like $22. You can pick it up at one of their bigger stores or have them order it to your store. I've used it before. It's a white paint or something. I'm sure there's other systems like Kreme that would work but cost money

They have this in stock at the store here in LaFayette for $27.99:

It's says the tank has to be clean and dry, then you slosh it aound in the tank and let it dry.  I wonder if you "paint" it on instead?  I wouldn't want the "seal" to cover the seam between the top and bottom.  I'd be afraid that when I broke it back apart the sealer would tear and start coming loose.

I worked on the tank with a wire brush on my cordless drill for about half an hour.  I got almost all the rust and goo off the top of the tank with no problem.  The bottom had a layer of rusty hardened gas and oil a good quarter inch thick, maybe more.  I got a bunch of the crap out of it, but there are lots of areas that you can't hit with the brush.  I'll pick up some chemicals after work tomorrow and try to finish up with the tank.  I need to get me a can of cleaner to soak the carb in too.  I have to clean the year and a half old gas out of Homer's carb anyway, so I might as well take this one apart and give it a good bath while I'm at it.  If it goes well from here, I'll fire it up next weekend.   ;D

Use denatured high concentrate to dissolve the varnish.
Or use laquer thinner.

I have use a Eastwood sealer on those old engines. works fine. It will even seal pin holes in sheet metal tanks. Gas proof

I've used acetone to remove tank varnish. Walmart has the best deal on a paint can of berrimans chem dip. It's right at $20. I'd get the tank sealer and paint it on.
