Those things had a habit of cracking the flywheel hub.

Yup, found out why those two were at the scrap yard!

Do the Johnson's have an aluminum flywheel?  I know a guy who welds aluminum and works cheap!

My rebuilt crankcase is here!  I got the breather, crankshaft seal and spark plug from the same place.  I'm still waiting on the gasket kit . . . and figuring out how to get this flywheel off without breaking it.

David, what kind of paint do you recommend for this engine?  Will Rustolium work?

From the time I first saw this engine, I wondered what the two hose clamps on the pully hub were for (in the picture, they are in the lower righthand corner between the flywheel and the big castle nut).  At first I thought they were to clamp some kind of home-made spacer in place or something.  When I took them off and scraped away the paint from the hub, I realized they served no usefull purpose as clamps . . . they weren't holding anything together or clamping anything down.  Why then, were they there?  As Winnie the Poo would say, "Think, think, think."  Well, I thought and thought and thought and all I thought of was how bad my brain hurt from thinking . . . so I just stopped thinking about it.

I was just about to fall asleep a few minutes ago and it hit me . . . Now I think I know why the two hose clamps had been put on there!  What's your best guess? . . . we'll see if great minds think alike.   ;)

Some do, mine seem to be cast. I'll keep my eyes out for a replacement. I tacked one to test for spark. No luck. The green one has been torn down, cleaned and put back together. Still need to resolve spark and get the carb cleaned. It is soaking now!

You can also get a decal kit.  The paint color is green . Sort'a between a olive and a forest green. The green color you have now is a little on the light side. Rustolium will work but prime it first. The cly will darken after s few hours of running. DON'T BREAK THE FLYWHEEL.

On eBay . . . and they want too much for it!  It didn't have a pulley . . . just the two hose clamps where the pulley should have been.

I may have a present for you. Somewhere in my catacombs I have a "kick starter pedal" if I can find it. Its not for if it breaks, Its when it breaks. Don't stomp on it too hard. This a tender spot. When you get the flywheel off , be sure to check the keyway very close. Another tender spot.

Adam in the machine shop has a lathe at his house.
You could machine a bore in a slice of large aluminum round stock to get what you want.
Go by and talk to him.

You wouldn't happen to have an S-237 wheel puller do you?   8)  I've found several special tools for these engines for sale on eBay, but not this one.  I don't guess one would be too hard to make . . . I know what it sounds like, but I'd really like to at least see a real one before I try to make one (or have one made).

If I'm reading the manual right, the pulley is held on by a set screw that goes into the indention in the sleeve.  The S-237 slides on where the pulley went and is held on by a set screw just like the pulley, but it has a bolt that threads into the end of it and is tightened up against the shaft, then whack it with a hammer?  Wouldn't you just screw it on in and pull the flywheel like you would with a normal puller?  I wish the manual showed a picture of it!

I may be wrong here , but is the shaft and flywheel on a taper ??  If so it seems to me that a good "wack" would make it pop off.  Its been to long since I messed with those things.  VW use to make a axle knocker that  just screwed on to the axle about 3" long with a threaded hole about 2" through it. You bottom the knocker out on the axle threads and then wacked the B'jesus out of it. Worked most of the time.

You are correct.  The driveshaft is tapered.  From the sound of the instructions, the "wheel puller" just locks around the pulley sleeve on the flywheel and then holds a bolt in place under a little tention against the end of the crank, then whack the b'jesus out of it to knock it loose.  Once it breaks free, it should "fall" off.  So far, I haven't got it to break free.  I'll see if Adam (our machinist at work that KC mentioned) can make me a tool.  All I need is a piece of 2" rod about 2" long with a 1.25" hole board in it and a set screw set in the side of it about a half inch from one end.  That should slide over where the pulley goes and let me lock it in with the set screw.  From there, I think I can use one of my tie rod pullers over the tool and pop it apart.  We'll see.
