I went back today to see what they had. They had one more B&S with a pump attached for $125 marked down from $400. It looked good, but I was happy with my little engine.

I picked up a few more goodies and headed back to work just a few minutes late from lunch! I checked with them about Joy's little figurine that she left with her name on it, but they had put it back and sold it yesterday.

saw this on the way back!
That was a load. Those old engines are Real heavy. Don't take to many to make a dozen  :D. My very rare old 1903 Metz & Wiess semi-diesel was 3hp and weight 1200 lbs

I started the tear down on the Maytag this evening.  It came apart pretty easy except for the flywheel.  All the videos I've watched on youtube show guys taking off the castle nut and sliding the flywheel off with almost no effort.  I think the problem is my engine doesn't have at pulley.  Instead it has some kind of bushing that had two hose clamps over it and the whole mess was covered with a thick layer of black paint.  It was getting dark and I didn't want to break anything so I stopped.

One of the thin shims on the crankshaft was broken into two or three pieces and one of the crankshaft bushing on the starter side is badly worn.  The carb is nasty, but should clean up good . . . there isn't much to it.  The piston, cylinder and rings look great.  I haven't taken the top of the gas tank, but looking down in it from where the carb mounts, I'd say I'm going to have to spend some time cleaning up some rust.

Who has a blasting cabinet I can use to clean some of this stuff up?

I have one that you can use. Its hit or miss as to whether it will actually remove rust or paint, but you can try!!!

The scrap yard had them sitting in a pile by the cashier. Jason Lockhart sent me a text yesterday and let me know that they had them. I paid a little over scrap value, but it was worth it. They are Utilimotors by Johnson Motor Co.

They look like a Maytag but they are not. Maytag was a victim of  corporate evilness from several company's. Johnson(Iron Horse), Elgin(Haf-A-Hors), Redwing , Redi-Motor. Interesting fact is Johnson went into the outboard motor business later after Maytag sued the whole lot of them and won. It seem'd that some Maytag folks jumped ship and took some " know-how" with them.  The big problem is finding parts for those "knock-off's". You don't see to many of those Johnsons. For all the years I mess'd around with antique engines I don't think I have seen but a handful of Johnson's running.  About a 100 Maytag's to one Johnson. DON'T BREAK ANY THING on those Johnsons NICK. You will be shot at dawn.

I'm trying to finish the tear down of my Maytag.  I CAN NOT get the flywheel to budge.   ???   But, while I was trying, I did find that it makes a spark!  Maybe not a strong one, but you know you've been shocked!   :o

If I can ever get the flywheel off, I'll have it completely disasembled within about 5 minutes.  I thought the pully had been replaced by some type of bushing, after I took the hose clamps off of it and scraped all the paint off of it, it appears to be made onto the piece the flywheel bolts onto.  It has dent in the center of it on the side opposite the key.  I though at first it was a set screw, but after scraping the paint off of it, I'm not really sure what it is.  For now I'm stumped.   ???

Get the manuel before you brake something. Those things had a habit of cracking the flywheel hub.

I don't have an S-237 and the alternate method doesn't seem to work . . . but at least I know what the depression in the center of the hub is for!   8)
