VW Restoration in Chattanooga

« on: July 03, 2003, 09:06:07 AM »
i have a 1972 vw super beetle convertible that has settled nicely into my backyard landscaping.  i plan to dig it out and maybe even attempt to make her roadworthy.

are there recommended mechanics and body shops in the chattanooga area?

is there a slavage yard within a day's drive?

i need new floor pans, possibly frame rails, rust cut away from the body and frame, body work (25 pounds of bondo!), a new engine, seats, top...  i suppose i'll need most everything.

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

thanks -

Pans are no problem, support rails will be fun to replace. Most anything for a bug can be found anywhere there were only 21 million or so of them made. All I can say about a body shop is find some one cretible to do the work www.rockymountainmotorworks.com has everyting you will need. But all I can say is have fun.

I'm not really sure if he's still there and/or still in business, but I think Jason Lockhart on Ringgold Road used to replace floor pans pretty resonable.  He used to come to our club meetings, but I haven't seen or heard anything of him in about 3 years.

For major rust repair (frame rails, heater channels, etc.), you'll need to find a body man that is good with old hot rods.  These guys are usually good at dealing with cutting out rusty pannels and welding in good metal.  The only body shop I know of that specializes in old Volkswagens is Overton's Restorations in Tallapoosa, GA.  It's a couple of hours south of Chattanooga, he's expensive, and has a long waiting list . . . but he knows how a bug is constructed, how to take it apart and put it back together as good (maybe better) than new.

For mechanical stuff, Jim Lockhart on Rossville Ave. or Harry Guin on old Ga. Hwy. 2 at the edge of Chickamauga Battlefield are about the only long-time VW mechanics still in business.  I've never used either of these guys myself, so I won't give you a first-hand recomendation to use them.  Maybe someone who has had some experice with them can tell you more.  I've met both of them, and both seem to really know their stuff . . . maybe that's why neither of them work cheap.

For a convertible top, I've always heard that Grant's Auto Glass and Trim is the best in Chattanooga.  I don't think I've ever seen one of their tops on a VW, but I have seen their work on other brands and it seemed to be top notch.

I can speak from experience as to a couple of the shops Zen mentioned.  When I screw up a VW beyond my ability to fix, I've had good experiences with taking (or towing) it to Jim Lockhart on more than one occasion.  I recommend him highly.  I've only bought parts from Harry, but he definately knows his VWs, air- and water-cooled.  I bought my Westy from Jason Lockhart (no relation to Jim) along with the promise that he'd get the engine going so I could drive it home. Eight months later, I called a tow truck, had it taken to Jim Lockhart, and drove it (finally) a few days later.

Don Roberson in Daisy does repair and restoration.  He did the body and rust repair on the Westy, and did okay, I guess.  He's better on Beetles, reasonable, and seeing better after his cataract surgery

Also, you might try Alvin Vaughn in Dalton for parts or service.  He's on the same road as VW of Dalton.  Head north about 3-5 mi.

Grant's did a top on a LeBaron for me and got good results.  They also helped restore some door panels that are holding up so far.  I hope to have them do some upholstery work soon.
Good luck!
