VW bus shifter bushing kit

« on: January 12, 2012, 11:28:04 AM »
So, I was looking at how to replace the shifter bushings and I know that you have to remove the transmission to put most of these on, but what about the ones on the front part of the shifter rod? What order do these go in? Are some not used? Or only used on certain years?

found this:

It looks like #1 is #15 in the second picture.
#2 and #3 look like #13 and #16

So what about 4, 5  and 6?

The second picture shows two different front and rear mounts, which leads me to believe it changed at some point, but when?

If I remember correctly , you have to take the shift rod apart up front to replace #'s 13,16 bush. You will find a collar with a set screw (#'s 11&17). These can be tough to take apart. TRY NOT TO TWIST THE SET SCREW OFF. Once the set screw is out you can bang  and beat the collar out of the way then try to separate the shift rods.  Get a new can of "Nut Buster". ;D ;D

Do you know which years used #19 and which years used #15?

I did a parts search on CIP1.com and found this out:

#1- 74-79 Buses- front bushing
#2- 68-92 Buses- front bushing
#3- 63-79 Buses- middle bushing- 2 required
#4- 66-73 Buses- front end bushing
#5- ?? ? ??
#6- 50-66 Buses (also 46-79 beetle, 56-74 ghia, Type 3 62-74, and Thing 73-74)

Does anyone know what #5 goes to?

Maybe if I keep searching, I'll answer all my questions!!!!

To re-state what David said... I would just go ahead and order a new collar too.  Every one I have tried to remove in years has snapped off, regardless of how much/ how long I have soaked it in PB Blaster.  When I did the ones in the westy, I already had a new collar and set screws waiting.  Good thing, too.... It snapped the moment that I put pressure on the screw.  Drilled it out, knocked off the old junk, and replaced the collar and screws.

As for the year model info, Nick... check the Wolfsburg West site,  They have good info on what year ranges take what bushings where.   :)

Ok, so the problem was that the front bushing was worn pretty badly and it was rotating the shifter. It allowed the cup to drop and the ball popped out and the shifter would turn 360. Now that the bushing is replaced, the shifter was adjusted as I interpreted the manual. Now it seems like the ball and cup are barely together and when you move it to 4th, it will still rotate clockwise a little but you can pop it back in. If you push down, the ball will stay in place.

Little background: the lockout plate was missing so I put another one in. Also, at some point the bottom plate with the welded on blind nuts looks to have been buggeted up and cut out/folded down out of the way. Regulate nuts and bolts held the shifter on which led to an inability to adjust the shifter. I tacked the nuts in place so I could try.

Is this on the green bus?
That would make sence as to why there was an extra shifter in it when I got it...
Good luck, I drove my green bus today.
It is sooooo much quicker than the 1600 powered 1970 Westie I had before...

Yes it is, what do you know about the extra shifter? Was it just thrown in or had it been swapped out?

I can't figure out how to make it now spin

The extra shifter looked to be a newer one.  The shifter that was installed when I sold it had that same green paint on it that the seats have.  So I'm thinking that it had not been changed out.
