Tech Tip of The Week

« on: February 12, 2005, 04:24:48 PM »
Here's another of my "famous" tech tips:

When you replace the brake pads on your bay window bus, be sure to tighten both bolts on each caliper.  There are TWO (2) bolts on each side for a total of FOUR (4) bolts.  If you only tightened 3 bolts, wear ear plugs . . . that racket the caliper makes when it is bouncing around the rotor when the loose bolt falls out is LOUD.  The bolt is also EXPENSIVE ($2 at the local ACE Hardware).

Why tell you this?  Well, I just thought you might need to know.

Shame on whoever did that. At least maybe the pads were not put on inside out.

It was late . . . replacing the rear shoes and wheel cylinders had taken a lot longer than it should have.  It was after dark and I . . . umm, I mean, "someone" was in a hurry 'cause it was getting cold and they were dressed for the warmer daylight hours.  This someone "remembers" tightening all four of the bolts . . . problem is, one of the bolts didn't remember getting tightened.  I guess the bolt felt rejected and figured it wasn't needed . . . and it just packed it bags and jumped off somewhere.

You know, I think I need to mount a great big super strong magnet on Homer's rear bumper.  That way if something like this happened to Homer, the magnet would grab the bolt . . . or heater box . . . or whatever else falls off . . .

The good news is nobody got hurt.  And the bus this happed to now has good brakes on all four corners.  It even has a fuctioning e-brake . . . which turns out to be a good thing to have if a bolt falls out of a front caliper.

Hmmm!   A magnet would be good, but I would stay off of railroad crossings and iron grated bridges.

If we give Betty and Kyle a few days, I'll be willing to bet they might be able to find that "elusive" bolt.

:-k  . . . Maybe an electro-magnet?  It'd give me something to do with all that extra voltage I have now that I've got a Bosch regulator . . . and I could turn it off when I got stuck on the tracks.

And I'd already thought about getting Betty to take a look for the bolt, but she may have to wait until spring to see it.  She didn't spot my heater box until they mowed.
