Mechanic in a bottle-sometimes it actually works.

« on: December 04, 2004, 06:50:37 AM »
As some of you know, Juan (the Mexican Beetle) had decided to stall randomly, but often, at idle.  I first tried a new air filter-no help.  I then decided to pour in some Valvoline Syntec FI cleaner.  Believe it or not, within 50 miles, it had stopped stalling and by the end of the tank the throttle response, which had always been somewhat jerky, had smoothed out.  I had always just chalked that one up to "they don't make them like they used to".  I don't usually put a lot of faith in the "mechanic in a bottle", but this stuff sure seemed to help!  Anyone with good or bad experiences along this line?  Post in!

Anthony, Belive it or not ,this stuff works. Autobahn brand from VW worked wonders with the old CIS injection systems with tons of miles on them. Chevron also makes a very good product. I use it in my Volvos once in awhile when they get "finky".It work a lot like a fuel dryer or water desperser for a carb engine. It does a good job on injectors also. Works wonders in the winter months due to the condensation of moisture that gathers in the fuel system due to the wonderful quality of fuel that has been bestowed on us. I have had zero problems using this product and I have used it a very long time. Hey, It even works in lawnmowers that sit around.

Speaking of lawnmowers, I put that "Sta-bil" fuel stabilizer in my gas in the fall and it stays fresh all winter.  The carb doesn't get gummed up, either.

Yes indeed , Sta-bil works very well with anything with a 2 cycle engine as well as 4 cycle engines. " De-Gooing " a 2 stroke engine is soooooo much fun. :(

Well , Be careful what you talk about. No sooner than we were talking about fuel additives that the old Volvo started to do the "Old Shuffle-Stumble-Stall" at stop lights. This is all that Linda needs going to Signal Mtn. from E. Brainerd and back everyday. Being a "panic mechanic" and not really liking to do Road Calls , laying under the hood on the side of the freeway with 80mph 18 wheelers trying to remove your Hemorrhoids  by the suction method, I poured a bottle of Valvoline FI cleaner in the fuel tank. One trip up the Mtn. and back home, All is well !! Im telling you ,this stuff works.

Hey, sweet.
My Volvo (240 wagon) does that too, so I might have to try that stuff.
I figured it was an FI problem causing all the trouble!
