How many miles does my bus have

« on: January 02, 2013, 11:25:39 PM »
Something I may never know the answer to, but I've been trying to pinpoint, is exactly how many miles my bus has seen on the road. Since the odometer doesn't exceed 100,000, I can only guess at how many times it's rolled over.

Fortunately, there are some clues.

The original VW warranty and maintenance booklet shows it was sold on February 13, 1979 at Southwest Volkswagen in Houston, TX. (Note: I was -6 months old.) It had 21 miles.

The next piece of paperwork I have is the original registration of Julio C. Rivera, who purchased it on 10/31/86. At that time, the odometer read 70,266. So it averaged about 10k a year its first 7 years on the road.

Next I have a service receipt from Northlake Service Center. It got a lot of services here. On 7/5/91 the mileage is printed as "100,000+" so it must have rolled over at some point between 1986 and 1991. If still he drove it 10k a year, it probably rolled over in 1989.

My next clue is another receipt from the same place on 10/15/93. The mileage is recorded as 44,017 which we can assume is 144,017. That's about 11,000 a year since 1989.

Finally another receipt on 10/24/94 shows 59,788. That's 15k since the previous year!

I don't have any more records until after I bought it (the first time). On 7/22/01 I changed the oil and the odometer read 71,502. So here's the question. If it's 171k, that means it only averaged 1600 miles since 1994. Or if it's 271k, then it was driven over 100,000 miles in 6 years? But that just doesn't seem as likely to me.

I sold the bus to Richard in 2004 but we didn't record the mileage. But when I got it back in 2007, it read 12,000 on the odometer. So sometime while it belonged to Richard, the odometer definitely rolled over.

That means right now with 28,294 on the odometer, my bus has over 228,000 miles. Or maybe 328,000 but most likely it's just 228k. Over 35 years that's an average of about 6500 a year.

it starts over each time. You have a low mileage bus with only 28k on it!  ;D ;D

I bet its 228,000 because I would imagine it'd be in a lot worse shape with an extra 100k miles on it. Look at most modern cars that show 100k miles and see the seat wear and tear- the scratches on the dash and knobs, the keys and switch- everything shows wear! I know you've replaced a lot and taken really good care of it, so it hasn't shown much wear in the last 60,000 miles, BUT it would look a lot worse with 328k. I just don't see it.

I think you're right Nick, which is why I lean more toward 228k. It just doesn't seem like it's got 300k miles. I do know one thing, Whoever Julio was, he seemed to take great care of it. I have a stack of receipts from all the service he had done, he definitely stayed on top of it.

It's nice having all this paperwork with it, but there's still some missing pieces. How did it get from Texas to Atlanta between 1979 and 1986? What happened to it after 1995, the last service record I have in Julio's name?

I might gather all this info up and make a post on The Samba. It's a long shot, but maybe someone out there knows more. Or they'll Google some of the details I have and find the info. Maybe someone that worked at Northlake Service Center will remember it.

RBT, you surprise me...
Back when you were in your 40's they created a type of music called rock and roll.
You remember, it started when you were in your 30's with glen miller and then went to that agitator Elvis... Well a few years later a man named Paul Simon teamed up with a goofy looking guy named Art and they sang songs... Later this Paul guy sang a song about Julio and him hanging out in the school yard.  I think you were pushing your 90's by then so maybe you missed it...
Glad I was able to teach you something ;D

Scof if you will.  I had the pleasure to meet S.&G and Elvis in Nashville when I was "Picking & Grinning" doing session work back in the day.  Elvis was still with Sun Records in Memphis. He wasn't really welcomed in Nashville at that time.   :o I have some old 78 records by Miller somewhere in the house.

This was before I made a career out of VW. Rode back and forth to Nashville with my Banjo picking Buddy in his '52 Bug.

Does driving back and forth to Nashville in a 52 Bug have anything to do with starting your career as a VW mechanic?   ;D

Could have.  Things I did learn was to carry a 14mm wrench, Hammer(for whacking the starter) a can of Go-Jo ,  a Heavy Parka for winter trips and a roll of paper towels for summer driving. All that fun while not spending over $2.00-$3.00 for fuel round-trip at a blazing speed of 68mph(wide open) and burning up Mount Eagle in 3rd @ 35mph(maybe) ;D ;D ;D

Is that the right spacing to jump the terminals on a starter or???

No. Every little nut on the car was 14mm.  Hammer for whacking the starter itself . Bad brushes, stuck bendix, dirty contacts on solenoid or all of above. The hammer and my arm were long enough to reach the starter without climbing under the car.
