Sigh.......  I'm depressed.  It seems the previous owner left the ignition switch on and the battery was dead this morning.  I replaced my,.. (I mean),... previous owners water hose clamp that was used to hold the distributer in place with a new(used) Vw dist/clamp that did not have a stripped screw in it.  ( Did you know that bolt that squeezes the dist shaft to the motor  is welded and hard to replace?)

Well,  I charged the battery for a few hours and with the confidence of a used car salesman,  I let er rip...  Nothing...  just rrr shush rrrshush rrshush.  I went inside and cryed.  About 5 oclock,  I had a visitor and was showing the bug off when i noticed the spark wire to dist rotor was not connected.  Darn that Previous owner.  I got rrshush poot poot.  rrrshush poot poot. then the battery died... it did not run.  sigh.  S/C

Zen,  did I use  "previous owner?  correctly?   do you think anyone suspects it may have been me?  S/c

Thanks Zen,  I'll check the mail
Sunday stardate 5/8/05
There is a big brass screw on the left side of the carb.  I think it is the air bypass or something.   It is next to the little idle mixture screw that is set to 2.5 turns.  The big Brass screw is supposed to be set somewhere but I cant find anything in my book.  Is there a base set point that anyone can tell me?

I decided to make sure that the spark plugs are tight today.  They aren't.  I tightened them. I think an acorn fell in to space around the sparkplugs when i pulled the wire of my left back one.  Will a oak tree grow in there?  Will an acorn explode?  time will tell

Bugtech.  if i turn the dist counter clock wise   i get that bid shush compression sound and when i turn it clock wise it goes away.  significant?  I don't know.  SC

monday  5/9

Got home from work and removed the carb again. Evidently,  I did not clean the holes and things inside little gas storage box under the float ,  it was rather un clean in there. Plus,  there was one jet or something right at the floor of the box.  I  used the second half of my carb cleaner can.
I knew now that it would run.   It did try real hard to start and I think It is better but no... .   I took another look at the points .  With the dist cap off and the rotor removed,  I cranked the motor.  it went little spark little spark about 5 times them it went big spark.  then little spark, little spark, little spark  ,little spark,   then a big spark,  what the heck?  I guess the points looked ok.    The coil go kind of warm too,  does this help any? Will someone please go get SC running.
SC , You didn`t help the cause any by leaving the switch on. Hard as hell on coils and points.  You are digging your hole deeper and deeper. Good luck on getting all the "crap" out of the carb with a spray can, but
Im scared to death to tell you to take the carb apart.
What would you take for this car anyway ?

Smelly Cat . . . email me your phone # or give me directions to your house and let me know what evening this week you will be home and avalible to try to fire it up.  \:D/   Hummmm . . . maybe that was a bad choice of words there.     If you've got a bad carb or distributor or points or coil . . . or just about anything else, don't worry . . . I've got lots of extras laying around here.  Of course, they're bad too . . . but some of them not quite as bad as others.  I'm sure we can get it running.

I work at SI in Chickamauga Monday-Friday and get off at 5:00 pm . . . I pass Reeds Road every day on the way home, so it's not too much out of the way.  Let me know when I can come over and help.   8)

Zen and Jason

Wow ee.  A bug intervention.  I looked up my odds of getting this motor running on a  Las Vegas website and it was 10 to 3 against,  so I cashed in my 401K,  laid the  money down.   Now that is out of the way.  I need to get the car running by the end of May.  or I'm out my retirement fund.

So maybe I have carppy points?
I went to autozone and they wanted 5 bucks for points and they did not have any,   O' Rielly had a a set, but they wanted 10 bucks so I walked.  I'm was gonna grind mine clean with a nail file.  Its like super rain storming now so Tuesday is shot to heck.  I got to run around Wednesday's after work .

Thursday would be good.  I think,  I'll send a email.  Thanks   I appreciate  the help,  i'm getting depressed with this machine diss'en me.  SC

So the "tentitive" plan is Thursday, 'bout 5:30ish?

Have "Mr. Feelie" handy.  Also, we'll probably need a 10mm and a 13mm wrench and a couple of flat screwdrivers.  I'll see if I can find my ignition file in case we need to work on the points.  Have your gas feed system handy too.  If you don't have a fire extinguisher, have a garden hose hooked up and on standby.

It's a real b**** to fight a gas fire with water, but if you gott'a you gott'a.  If we do start a gas fire, I'll show you how to keep everything from burning up while the gas burns its self out.  I've got some experiance in that area.  In fact, I've got a little more experiance than I would like to have in that area.  I can bring my fire extinguisher, but it's empty.  I don't know why.

We also might need a spark plug socket, a short extension, and a ratchet.  Have the battery charged up if possible.  If you don't have a charger let me know and I'll bring mine.

I'm confident that we can get it running.  At 10 to 3 odds, I'll place a small wager on it!

By the way, I know why AutoZone is out of points.  I'm not going to say why they are out though . . . Ret.Bugtech would throw rocks at me!
