Bus tires

« on: February 15, 2014, 01:10:15 PM »
Most people consider the Hankook RA08 to be the gold standard for bus tires, but Anthony clued me in to a Chinese tire that is the same spec: Goform G325. I got to see them first hand on his camper at the dead of winter campout, and they look pretty good plus they are about half what the Hankooks cost.

The only thing I don't know is how long they will last, and that's a biggie to me. I got ten years out of my Yokohamas, arguably they are in need of replacing though. I'm still leaning on picking up the Hankooks though, just for peace of mind. The cheapest price online I have found is $85.40/ea.

I put together a pricing matrix to keep track of everything while I shop. If you find any other deals let me know. I'm hoping to pick some up with my tax return. Mine are quite a bit worn!

Right now, Performance Plus has the Hankook RA08 on sale for $69 each through Feb 28, but only in the 195/70R15 size. How would that compare to the stock size of 185R14? They would be slightly fatter wouldn't they?

Just checked my spare and it's 195/75R14. It's a bit taller than the stock 185R14.

Ok, so if no Aspect Ratio (middle number) is used, then you assume an aspect ratio of 80(% of the width-the first number). So your 185R14C should be searched as a 185/80/14. I then searched for a tire calculator. The Miata Tire Calculator has always been my favorite, but doesn't work on a mac. I used http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

There would also be a .5" gap all the way around your rim! Their overall diameter would be .09" off (with the 195 being slightly larger in diameter).

Yeah I was excited by the price and neglected to notice it's a 15" tire. According to Karl in the tire sticky the assumed aspect ratio of 185R14 is 82.

I'm gonna stick with the 185R14 Hankooks I think.

I think these would be awesome for the stock 15" wheels that came on the earlier buses!

Or if you were entertaining putting aftermarket wheels on your bus, you'd probably only find 15" wheels and need the 15" tires to match. This could be really cool if you want proper tires on a dressed up bus!

Have your bus centers remounted into some 15" wheels.
I also think that Bus Depot sells a 15" steelie that is just like the late bays (i.e. the hubcap holders are identical).

I'm still happy with my cheapie tires!

I'm happy with the grip, noise level, off-road abilities. Wear? We'll see.

An '82 aircooled Westy. Don't worry about being out of the loop. I haven't been seen much lately, either!

Just ordered a set of Hankooks from Performance Plus. After blowing one on the interstate coming back from Land Between the Lakes last month, I didn't want to take another trip without getting the rest of those old tires replaced, especially with Sevierville coming up.

Hankooks are installed! They look great and the bus drives great, too. Looking forward to the trip to Sevierville on these.
