I thought it was a 3peed that shifted itself. maybe it was an automatic stick shift?  Heck, I was on a date and I might have had  mind on other things.  SC

This says you can leave it low at drive around,  So  Rasberries

You know what a manual transmission is, so I'll focus on the AutoStick.

The AutoStick was introduced in the 1968 model year.  It is a clutch-pedal-less, 3 speed, dry clutch, torque converted, semi-automatic transmission.  In other words, the driver shifts without the use of a clutch pedal.  All the driver has to do is to let up on the gas, change the shift lever position, and re-engage the gas pedal.

Shifting is accomplished electrically with the aid of a vacuum system.  The actual AutoStick transmission is basically the same as the manual in its two top ranges (first and second range in an AutoStick correspond to third and fourth gear in a manual).  The AutoStick may be driven by going through the ranges, Low, First, and Second OR it may simply be left in First for around town driving.  It is definitely NOT an automatic transmission in the sense that term is used today.  Performance in a well maintained AutoStick is close to that of a manual, but a manual does have an slight edge in acceleration and top speed.

Thats why they say  :   Semi-automatic  and  Fully -automatic
The auto- stick is a lot like the old Mopar Fluid Drive from years ago only they had a clutch pedal to change gears or just leave it where it was and let the torque converter do the job. You always had to use the clutch to change gears on the Fluid Drive.  As simple as I can get it.

I was planning on putting a "manualized" auto-stick tranny in a dune buggy I had a few years ago . . . never got around to that project and finally cut my losses and sold the dune buggy.

All of the complicated stuff seemed to be associated with the automatic clutch . . . but the lever that actually moves the throw-out bearing is in line with it's manual counterparts lever.  It's just a little closer to the front of the tranny and doesn't have to move as far.  I figured with a little modification of the clutch pedal and cable, you could make it a fully manual 3 speed, but it would still have a torque converter so you could stop and start without using the clutch.  The clutch would only be for shifting gears.  Kind'a like the old Mopar tranny Ret.Bugtech was talking about.
