62 vw turn signal issues HELP!!!

« on: September 23, 2015, 02:31:54 PM »
I have a 62 I just got not long ago. The turn signals weren't working at all so we ended up replacing the relay and the switch. Now when I turn the ignition on the turn signals work fine,  however when I start my engine I get nothing.  No lights at all when I switch on my turn signals.  Where should I start looking first to fix this? If they work with the engine off why won't they when it's running?  I'm lost

Could a bad voltage regulator cause the turn signals not to work but let everything else while the engine is running?  I'm getting 16 volts at the battery and over 17 when the engine is idling.  Well above the 12v I should be getting.  So clearly there is an issue there.  But would that affect the turn signals?  Considering they work when the engine is off and the battery is still at 16v.

I have always heard that you should get about 13.8-14max, so I'd say the 16-17 is too high. I would check that. For the sake of experimenting, disconnect the signal wire from the generator/VR to prevent it from charging (or somehow disable the generator charging system) and see if they work. If they do, then you will have narrowed it down, if not, then keep looking, but figure out why you have 16+ volts!!!

You need a regulator,  16 volts will blow the battery up,  should be less than 14

AMEN!  Bosch Solid State regulators are the ONLY way to go!  If you don't have one, you need one, even if the regulator you have on it is working fine for now.
